For local Shànghǎi snacks and eats from across China, North Jiangxi Rd (江西北路) is stuffed with chefs wilting over steamers, boisterous kebab sellers and red-cheeked málàtàng (麻辣烫; spicy soup with meat and vegetables) vendors. You'll also find Shāndōng dàbǐng (山东大饼; Shāndōng flatbread;) from north China and the ever-scrummy ròujiāmó (肉夹馍; bun stuffed with pork and peppers). Several Buddhist vegetarian restaurants cooking up meat-free pot-stickers and other vegie dishes are flung out down Haimen Rd from the Xiàhǎi Buddhist Monastery.
