Home to the largest concentration of bars and cafes in the whole of Shànghǎi, the French Concession offers drinkers a choice between elegant bars housed in colonial-era villas, speakeasy-style spots, craft beer breweries and expat-friendly sports pubs. The small strip of Yongfu Rd between West Fuxing Rd and Wuyuan Rd is lined with bars and clubs, while a crop of mostly beer bars has sprung up on Yongkang Rd.

Yongkang Rd Bar Street

A new bar street suddenly formed largely overnight during 2013 in the French Concession, kicked off by the peerless Café des Stagiaires, which still leads the way. The small strip of Yongkang Rd between South Xiangyang Rd and Jiashan Rd was suddenly crammed with bars, making it a convenient catch-all similar to Hong Kong's Lan Kwai Fong entertainment area (albeit much smaller and quieter) for a night on the Shànghǎi tiles. A pavement curfew of 10pm reigns, however, to appease locals living on the road, who were up in arms over the sudden, noisy transformation of their neighbourhood.
