Sakya has two monasteries, on either side of the Trum-chu. The heavy, brooding, fortress-like monastery south of the river is the more impressive main complex, and the only one open to visitors currently. The hillside northern monastery, largely reduced to picturesque ruins, is undergoing restoration work and was closed to visitors at the time of research, but there are fine views of it from the main monastery's upper rampart kora.
