    Coffee Top

This Tibetan place is a top choice for a coffee, or a Tibetan breakfast ( tsampa porridge with honey; ¥22) at the start of your Xining day. There's Bob Marley, a charcoal ceiling, books scattered around, comfy sofas and even a picture of pre-fire Notre Dame. There's a pleasant spot on a raised platform at the back where you can stake your claim.

    Josai Pub

With guitars lying around on the sofas, a pool table and superb views of Yushu, the river and hills from the veranda, this excellent choice also has a good menu of grilled meats and pizza. There's a fridge just inside the door where the Blue Barley beer chills alongside the Hoegaarden; cocktails and coffee are also served. The friendly owner Sai speaks English.

Greenhouse has a charming, rustic split-level wood interior, super-comfy leather sofas and some of the best coffee in town (from ¥25). You can also munch on pizzas, burgers, sandwiches (from ¥33), cake, scones or tiramisu to a mellow music selection. Plenty of plugs and free wi-fi, mercifully nonsmoking, and there's a shelf or two of books aloft.

    Yushu Spinal Cord Injury Organisation

This lovely cafe also sells a very appealing collection of bags, shoes, jewellery, cushions, socks, slippers and clothes, made by local people afflicted with spinal cord injuries. Even if you don't buy anything from the shelves, it's a very relaxing spot for a coffee, easing back to jazz and other well-chosen music.

At the rear of a courtyard of Qiyi Lu, this smart bar has all manner of imported beers as well as craft beers chilling in a bank of fridges on the far wall. Look for the grey brick building with a large deeply rusted iron facade, topped with glass, in the corner of the courtyard, next to a hotpot restaurant.
