I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww…
As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.
It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

Has anyone successfully taken the ferry from Shekou (Shenzhen) to HKIA (Hong Kong airport Skypier) to catch an international flight? Or from Shezhen Fuyong to HKIA? There's a bunch of information online, but it's kinda confusing... the timing especially... I can't tell how early I need to arrive either at the ferry terminal or Skypier at HKIA.
This chart seems very handy, so I think we could potentially check our bags in Shekou to go straight through, but we'd still have to go through security…
Planning Trip to China for 3 weeks in November 2018, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macau - how much would a trip cost for 2 adults on a budget? And what do you recommend? We have stayed in Hostels/Bed & Breakfasts and rented apartments out of the country before, would you recommend that in China as well? We are flying in from the US and will be taking the fast train inside the country but may still need other means of transportation if necessary. Any recommendations? I will also search this…

After that I will be traveling in Sichuan and Southern China to eventually end up in Hong Kong or Shanghai. Some things I absolutely want to visit are…
