Three Stone Kite Shop

Top choice arts & crafts in Beihai Park & Xicheng North

Home of the last remaining traditional kite crafters in Beijing, this cluttered little cave is piled high with hand-painted fēng zhēng (kites) in the shape of auspicious birds and beasts. Kites in the ¥300 range (about 80cm wide) are a suitable size for flying, while the miniature kites make fine souvenirs.

Three Stone is a family business that claims a kite-making lineage back several generations to the Qing dynasty. The owner's great-grandfather was supposedly a craftsman serving in the Forbidden City towards the end of the dynasty, in charge of making lanterns, fans and kites.
