Noodles in Drum Tower & Dongcheng North

Gulou's punk scene has stagedived since the closure of legendary venue Mao Livehouse, but this hutong joint is keeping the punk fires – well, the hobs – burning. Chinese punks and the punk-curious come for hand-pulled noodles served on bulldog-emblazoned plates, cheap booze, and walls adorned in music memorabilia – much of it amassed by the singer of a local punk band.

Lei Jun, who co-founded Punk Rock Noodles, was the lead singer of punk band Misandao (1999–2014). With his pet bulldog, Doc Martins and skinhead haircut, Lei was a Beijing punk icon and longtime champion of the city's alternative music scene. He passed away in 2015.
