Hearty cazuelas (soup), German-influenced küchen (cake), fresh fish like merluza (hake) and congrio (conger eel) and absolutely excellent beef are on the menu (skip Chile's ubiquitous and horrendous hallulla bread!). Don't skip traditional Mapuche food, though, often flavored with a generous dose of smoked merkén pepper. Chile's free-range scrambled eggs and their bright-yellow yolk (are they feeding those chickens marigolds?) cooked in an earthenware paila make breakfast a real treat, too.
