Tour description provided by Viator

From San Pedro de Atacama we will go to the Domeyko mountains, where you can enjoy the desert landscape and a stunning view of the Andes, until reaching the Rainbow Valley sector, which owes its name to its colorful hills, that give the impression of a rainbow. This phenomenon is attributed to the composition of the minerals. After walking around this area, we will proceed to Hierbas Buenas, where you will find volcanic rock formations that tell the history of peoples who have inhabited the place through their petroglyphs. After this visit we will go back to San Pedro de Atacama.
Begin your journey to Rainbow Valley by going up the Andes and reach the highest point at 4,800 meters above sea level. There, make your first stop for breakfast at a traditional place called Bofedal of Quepiaco. Here, you can spot and observe a variety of birds that inhabit this place all year round. Continue your journey to visit the Pacana Monks, who live at a height of 4,500 meters. Enjoy the views of columns of rocks with very particular shapes and in the background, you can see the Salar de Aguas Calientes. Finally, continue to the Salar de Tara but along the way, you will see rock formations that look like stone cathedrals. At the Salar de Tara, see some spectacular wildlife while having a light lunch and preparing for your return trip to San Pedro de Atacama.
