Getting There & Away

Ancud has three bus terminals. Cruz del Sur owns and operates the main Terminal de Buses, which offers the most departures to Chiloé's more southerly towns, with departures around every hour, and to cities on the Panamericana to the north (including two daily departures to Santiago at 7pm and 7:35pm). It's a five-minute walk from the waterfront and downtown. A taxi to/from the terminal to Av Costanera in downtown costs CH$2000. Queilen Bus operates out of the old Terminal Municipal, 1.5km from the center, most economically reached by flagging down a black-and-yellow colectivo on Dieciocho (CH$400 by day, CH$500 by night or Sunday).

Cruz del Sur buses go to Punta Arenas every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:30am. Queilen Bus heads out Monday at 7:30am. However, travelers going to most southerly regions beyond Chiloé and to Bariloche, Argentina, will do better to take buses from Puerto Montt.

Chiloé's more rural destinations to the east, as well as afternoon buses to Chepu, the gateway to the northern end of Parque Nacional Chiloé, are serviced by buses that leave from the small Terminal Inter-Rural on Colo Colo. The schedule is posted near the bathroom (if not, ask at the administration office); simply buy tickets on the bus.

To visit Monumento Natural Islotes de Puñihuil on public transport, Buses Mar Brava heads to nearby Pumillahue (CH$2000), at 1pm and 5pm (Monday to Friday) and 1pm (Saturday). Buses Pumillahue heads out at noon and 4pm (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), 4pm (Tuesday and Thursday) and 1pm (Sunday). The bus will drop you at Piedra Run crossroads, from where it is a 2km walk to the beach (follow the paved road). In low season, services drop off substantially.
