The main branch of a three-store family-run Jewish bakery minichain, Solly's is the city's best bagel spot. Drop by for a breakfast schmear of cream cheese and smoked salmon on a toasted, fresh-made sesame and you'll likely leave an hour later with an armful of unanticipated treats for later in the day: potato knishs, chocolate babkas and deep-fried potato latkas recommended.
With a deli cabinet of cream-cheese tubs and jarred pickles, this is a great spot to create a picnic (there's a small park two blocks east). But if it's raining, stick around for lunch: chicken matzo-ball soup and a pastrami-on-rye sandwich is the way to go. And to be sure you don't look like a tourist, copy the locals by ordering from the right-hand end of the counter then paying at the left-hand end before picking up your order.
