From Meat Cove, a 16km hiking trail heads west to Cape St Lawrence lighthouse and Lowland Cove. Spend an hour gazing over the ocean and you're guaranteed to see pods of pilot whales. They frolic here all spring and summer and into the fall. Carry a compass and refrain from exploring side paths; locals have gotten lost in this area.
As well as watching for frolicking whales in unbelievably clear water, keep an eye on the earth for orchids – some rare species here aren't found anywhere else in Nova Scotia.
