One Week

Fly to Yellowknife and spend the first day at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, ambling around the Old Town, and getting out on the lake among floatplanes and houseboats. In the evening, sip beer, eat lake fish and (in summer) watch the sun not set.

Then rent a car and head south. Car-camp along the Waterfalls Route, then drive to Fort Smith to snap the woolly behemoths that inhabit Wood Buffalo National Park. Backtrack to Fort Simpson and join a flightseeing tour into Nahanni National Park Reserve.

Two Weeks

Spend a couple of days exploring Yellowknife, then fly to to Fort Simpson, meet your outfitter and spend 10 days paddling the paradisiacal South Nahanni River.

Or…do a side trip from Yellowknife to Inuvik, do the scenic flight or drive to Tuktoyaktuk for a dip in the Arctic Ocean, and then join a four-day Parks Canada trip to the remote Ivvavik National Park for some caribou- and musk-ox-spotting.

Or…stop in Norman Wells en route to Inuvik for a couple of days' paddling on the Mackenzie River, and then drive the scenic, challenging Dempster Hwy from Inuvik and back.
