Welcome to Kananaskis Country

On the eastern edge of the mountains you can drive the scenic and sparsely trafficked Hwy 40 (south off Hwy 1, 20km east of Canmore) to the Kananaskis lakes, before turning down onto the unsealed Smith Dorrien Rd to complete the drive back to Canmore by a circuitous, picturesque route. Or if you can, continue along Hwy 40 – which will treat you to blankets of pine forest interspersed with craggy peaks and the odd moose in the verge – all the way to Highwood House. This scenic drive is definitely the road less traveled and well worth exploring (but be aware that this portion of the road is closed over winter).

Another Round Brewery Tour

Meet your tour group in the heart of 17th Avenue, where the “born and raised” staff of Trolley 5 Restaurant and Brewery will greet you. Be prepared to be spoiled with a family style feast highlighting Trolley 5’s local food and of course, core beers, seasonal beer and collaborations. It’s truly an original, impressive, space. On your second stop, visit Wildrose Brewery in Alberta. Their Taproom is housed in AF 23, part of Currie Barracks, Calgary’s military base established in 1934 and now being re-purposed as an inner city destination near Mount Royal University. This brewery location is only a small portion of their overall production. However, they like to think this location as a place where top-secret experiments were conducted to determine the effects of beer and delicious food on soldiers. Then travel across the city to tour the newest breweries to hit Calgary.  First up is Banded Peak Brewing, named after a line of mountains in Kananaskis Country in the Rocky Mountains. These brewers are more than your typical outdoor enthusiasts, however their production ideas are just as crisp and fresh.   The last stop is Cold Garden Beverage Company, nestled in the trendy and spirited neighborhood of Inglewood. Not only will these folks be making some amazing brew but they will be expanding into spirits. Truly a grass root company, they are breathing new life into an area of the city that was once known as the “Beer Flats”. At the end of the tour, you will be driven back to your Trolley 5, where you can continue your night along or make your way home.  Talk to your chauffeur/guide or the friendly staff at Trolley 5 for a Checker Yellow cab. They want to make sure you are taken care of and reach your final destination safely.

High Spirits Adventure

Let us showcase the spectacular scenery of the Blue Rock and Sheep River Wilderness areas.  This trip begins with a short trip through the Foothills passing through historical communities.  We will travel through rolling hills, ranchlands and along mountain meadows to the headwaters of a glacial stream in the heart of Kananaskis country.  There will be stops along the way for photos; sometimes of passengers in front of the Rocky Mountains, and sometimes of the wildlife with which we share these parks.   We will then wind our way down the Sheep River valley to the Eau Claire Distillery and the Chinook Arch Meadery.  You can sample the local products, and even do a little shopping if you like.   We can also include a stop at the world’s largest glacial erratic and inspiration for a local craft brewery’s name, the Big Rock. The tour can include a pack along picnic, or can focus on taking photos in areas less busy with tourist traffic.  Our experienced drivers can help spot wildlife and historical architecture.  This tour is fabulous in the morning, as the light is exceptional for photography, or in the late afternoon with the sunset changing the landscape.
