In BC and Alberta, attitudes toward gays and lesbians are relaxed, especially in urban areas such as Vancouver and Calgary where there are dedicated rainbow-hued nightlife scenes. BC was one of the first places in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2003.
While you won’t find such an open gay and lesbian culture in other parts of the region, attitudes are pretty liberal throughout the provinces and in the Yukon. That said, the lack of prominent gay and lesbian communities outside urban centers tends to mean that most people keep their orientation to themselves.
