For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.

I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea…

I am heading into Manaus on the 26th and have used up all my repellent containing DEET in the Pantanal. Rookie error I know but I thought there would be ONE place in Brazil I could spend a ridiculous amount of money on some more. So, is there any chance anyone is leaving Manaus in the next few days and has some DEET repellent they would be willing to sell/give/leave me??? Has anyone got any intel on the effectiveness of icaridina as a substitute?! Is there anywhere in Manaus to purchase DEET…

Hi all,

I am shortly to be visiting Brazil on a business trip, and am likely to have to shuttle about between Rio, Sao Paulo, Brasilia the north-east and the far north at quite short notice. Ideally I don't want to buy any flights in advance, enabling me to be flexible. However I'm also worried about them selling out or suddenly going up in price. Do you think it will cause problems to buy them at the last minute? Any advice grateful received.

Muito obrigado. Can't wait to see your beautiful…

I'm going to be in Rio and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to where I could see lion tamarins in the wild. I read that the golden lioin tamarins are seen in Poco Das Antas Biological Station, which is about 2 hours away from the city, but I also read that transportation and tours to that place are very expensive. Can other types of lion tamarins be seen in other areas close to Rio?

The second part of my question is that, being a nature-lover, I'd like to experience the Atlantic…

Bom dia!

I'm currently planning a 4-month trip to South America with my wife later this year, and would greatly appreciate some advice from the Thorntree hive mind on the Brazilian section of our itinerary. I’ve been researching the trip extensively over the last few months, including on these forums, but it seems like every time I think I’ve worked out a plan I’m suddenly seized by an urge to rip it all up and start again… South America is a big place!

Brazil is our first stop, we’ve already…

Hi! A friend and I will be traveling through South America for a few months next year and we plan making a stop in Bonito for a few nights. We will be there in February, which will obviously be a very busy time of year there. Everything I’m reading says to book tours and attractions in advance but I’m having a little bit of a difficult time figuring out where to book.

We want to do a lot of the usual culprits like the Prata River, Blue Cave and maybe the Abismo Anhumas (which I know has a very…

Hi, I am planning on a long weekend visiting the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls. A few questions:

  • Is it worth trying to see it from the Argentina side too? If so, what are the visa policies?

  • What recommendations do people have for accommodations on the Brazil side?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I'm planning to visit Brazil in a number of months, and I would like help coming up with a budget. My goal is to live in Rio for at least a month. However, I'm not sure how much I'll need to get by.

My plans are as follows. I would like to live like a local while I'm in Rio. No big excursions (maybe a day trip or two to some in-city destinations). I plan to rent a one bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood (I've found a few in Copacabana at R1500 online). I'll cook at home most of…

Hi all! I'm planning a trip to Brazil, and interested to know about camping there. It's always been my dream to travel the world, and (because of my connections to the country)Brazil is where I will start my travels. Like most other travelers, I have a limited budget. And I'm interested to know if camping is a viable way to travel there.

My first concern is safety. Brazil is known to be dangerous, and I don't wish to put myself at risk. I wouldn't camp in or near cities, but in rural areas…
