Dangers & Annoyances

While São Luís has a bit of a bad reputation and its crime statistics are indeed worrying, most crime does not target travelers; as long as visitors stick to basic big-city precautions they should have no problems. During the day it's fine to explore the historic center on foot but in the evening it's better to go in a group or, better still, take taxis.

Tourist Information

Central de Informações Turísticas The main information office of Setur, the city tourism department, and also the most helpful; English and French were spoken when we visited.

Maranhão Tourist Information Maranhão’s official state tourist information office, located in the Arrivals hall of the airport. English isn't a strong point, but the bilingual tourism site has helpful descriptions.
