Along the coast, tropical beach pousadas are sun-kissed retreats for sand worshippers, especially around Ilha de Santa Catarina. Inland, German-influenced lodges dominate around Blumenau, Joinville, the Vale Europeu and the Serra Geral. Florianópolis has the most diverse options, from hostels to boutique hotels.
Santa Catarina is where it's at for seafood in southern Brazil. Specialties like locally harvested oysters and tainha (mullet) are held in high regard. But it's not all ocean delicacies – a strong German influence means there's plenty of sausages, ham hocks and apple pie to go around too.
