Festa de Iemanjá

Religious in Salvador

Perhaps Candomblé’s most important festival, the event pays homage to the orixá (deity) Iemanjá, goddess of the sea and fertility. Devotees descend on Praia Rio Vermelho in the morning, where ceremonies are held to bless offerings of flowers, cakes, effigies and perfume bottles. The ensuing street festival goes until night and is packed with people and some of Salvador’s best bands.
