This well-organized outfit runs a free walking tour that takes in a bit of history and culture in downtown Rio. You’ll visit the Travessa do Comércio, Praça XV, Cinelândia, the Arcos da Lapa and the Selarón steps, among other places. Although it’s free, the guide asks for tips at the end: R$50 is fair for the insightful three-hour walk.

The tour departs at 10:30am Monday through Saturday from Largo da Carioca (exit C out of Carioca metro station). Just show up; reservations aren’t necessary. The same outfit also leads pub crawls in Ipanema and Lapa (each R$60), as well as a free Copacabana and Ipanema walking tour.
