The classic hike to the summit of Pico da Bandeira can be made without climbing gear or a guide, as the trail is gradual and well marked. You can drive or take a taxi to the trailhead at Tronqueira, 8km up a steep dirt road from the park entrance. Cars are prohibited beyond Tronqueira. From here, a gradual 9km climb leads to the summit. Allow about three hours for the ascent, and two hours to get back down.

If you prefer to hike with a guide, various agencies around town offer guided excursions, including predawn departures arriving at the summit in time for sunrise.
