Welcome to Olivença
Most visitors come here, though, for the great waves just north of town at Backdoor, one of Brazil's best surf breaks. Make a night or weekend of it by checking into Back Door Village, a pleasant beach hotel with a swimming pool and thatched-roof, '60s-style bungalows. It's located just outside of Olivença, on the road to Ilhéus. Also in the vicinity is the touristy but family-friendly beachfront complex of Batuba Beach, where you can do everything from dining on the sand (mains R$18-35) to catching live music to taking a surf lesson. Check the website for more details.
City buses leave every 30 minutes from the Ilhéus bus station (passing the city bus terminal) for Olivença (30 minutes) from 6am to 11pm. The bus travels close to the beaches, so you can hop off when you see one you like, or just tell the driver your destination. Private transfer can also be arranged through Ilhéus travel agencies (around R$80 for up to four people).
