Ambitious hikers can follow the long, flat beach 8km north from Itaúnas to Riacho Doce, a small river that forms the border between Espírito Santo and Bahia. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the hand-painted sign on the far side ‘Sorria – você está na Bahia!’ (Smile – you’re in Bahia!). Near the river mouth, Pousada do Celsão serves tasty home-cooked meals.

To return to Itaúnas, retrace your steps down the beach, or hitch a ride with one of the pickup trucks or school buses that occasionally drive the 16km road back to town.
