Over 40 beaches are found along Ilhabela's considerable coastline. Of the sheltered beaches on the north side of the island, Praia Jabaquara is recommended. It can be reached by car via a dirt road. On the eastern side of the island, where the surf is stronger, try beautiful Praia de Castelhanos (good for camping and surfing), which is backed by the steeply rising jungle. From the town of Borrifos at the southern end of the island, you can take a four-hour walk to Praia Bonete, a windy surf beach that you will share mostly with a local community of fisherfolk. Other worthwhile beaches you can drive to include Praia da Ilha das Cabras and Praia do Curral, 1.8km and 8km south of Barra Velha, respectively.
