Accessed via a trailhead 3km north of town, this stone-paved road built in the early 19th century by slaves (escravos in Portuguese) passes through rugged high country between Diamantina and Mendanha, 20km to the northeast. It's best undertaken with a guide (get info from Estação Espinhaço or the Secretaria de Turismo), as the trail is intermittent and poorly signposted.
