Getting There & Away
If arriving by plane or bus you'll first land in Porto Seguro. Car and passenger ferries travel almost constantly between Porto Seguro and Arraial d’Ajuda between 7am and midnight, with half-hourly boats running from midnight through the early morning. Prices for the balsa (ferry) vary slightly depending on which way you're going, and which ferry you happen to get on: typically you will travel for free going from Arraial to Porto Seguro and pay R$4.50 the other way around. Cars cost between R$10 and R$12. The ride takes 10 to 15 minutes. From the boat dock, jump on a bus or Kombi van to the center of Arraial d'Ajuda (R$3.25). Depending on where you're staying, you can also ask the driver to drop you off at one of the many pousadas (guesthouses) located along the road into town.
From Arraial's ferry port, you can also catch a van or Aguia Azul bus to Trancoso (R$11, one hour). Return buses from Trancoso pick up in the square a few minutes' walk inland from the Quadrado area along the main road (Estrada de Trancoso). Aguia Azul buses also make the bumpy journey to Caraíva (R$20, three hours) at 7am and 3pm daily, and from Caraíva to Arraial at 6:20am and 4pm.
