Flights & getting there

Buses and trufis (shared car, minibus) leave from the bus station, 1.5km north of the town center. A moto-taxi into town costs B$3.

The road between San Rafael and San José is unpaved and public transportation is infrequent. A trufi to San Rafael leaves at 9am daily (four hours, B$50) and makes the return journey from San Rafael at 2pm.

Buses from Santa Cruz depart daily from the bimodal terminal between 4pm and 6pm (B$50, four hours). Five services return from San José to Santa Cruz, all leaving between 3pm and 11:30pm. To Quijarro on the Brazilian border buses leave at 2pm and 3:30pm (B$50 to B$80, six hours).

A more leisurely way to travel between San José and Santa Cruz or Quijarro is by Ferrobus train or the slower Expreso Oriental train. You’ll need to show your passport on purchasing your ticket and again to access the platform.
