Dangers & Annoyances
Radiation The thin air, characteristically brilliant sunshine and reflection off the water mean scorching levels of ultraviolet radiation. Wear a hat and sunscreen in this region, and drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.
Crowds Be especially careful during festivals. Stand well back during fireworks displays, when explosive fun seems to take priority over crowd safety, and be wary of light-fingered revelers.
ATMs dot Plaza Sucre. Shops on Av 6 de Agosto will exchange foreign currency (clean dollar bills preferred). Most artesanías sell Peruvian soles.
Entel, Tigo and Viva puntos (privately run phone offices) are located along Av 6 de Agosto and around town. Many also offer relatively cheap international calls.
