Performances take place in local venues as well as on the streets, so keep an eye on the listings page and you might catch a pop-up cinema or an impromptu circus show. The programme is great for families too with events organised for a younger audience, including parades and theatre shows.

There’s a serious side to this year’s festival as Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma’s National League for Democracy, is Guest Director and has recorded a video that will be shown to festival-goers.

As the sun sets, Brighton turns its focus on contemporary music. Catch a performance from Asian Dub Foundation or Lee 'Scratch' Perry among others.
