'I'm a photographer, not a terrorist!'

Photographer in Alabama Hills Recreation Area, California

Several photographers - including an award-winning architecture photographer, a press photographer and one working for the BBC - have been detained under s44 of the Terrorism Act.

I'm a Photographer Not a Terrorist! have organised a mass turnout of photographers, professional and amateur, to rally against the abuse of these laws, scheduled for 12 noon this Saturday 23 Jan at Trafalgar Square in London.

Images inspire us in many ways - think back to pictures that set you on your path and made you discover new places. Wild landscapes you'd never seen before, historical moments you could never experience if they hadn't been captured on film. I remember seeing pictures of New York fire escapes zig-zagging up beautiful old rust-brown apartment buildings - they were a world away from the sunny Australian suburban sprawl I was living in and all I knew was how much I wanted to see them in real life. They inspired me to travel. I don't want to imagine a world without amazing photography.

As PHNAT say: 'We must work together now to stop this before photography becomes a part of history rather than a way of recording it.'
