Health & insurance
Before You Go
Benin requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travellers. Vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningococcal meningitis, typhoid and boosters for tetanus, diphtheria and measles are also wise. Malaria is an issue, so bringing prophylactics is recommended.
Be sure you have adequate insurance before you hit the road. Ensure that your coverage includes evacuation in the event of an emergency.
Availability & Cost of Healthcare
Medical care is below the standard of health care in Europe, North America and other Western countries. Costs are low but transfer to a better facility outside the country can be expensive.
The tap water in Benin is not safe to drink.
