Arriving at Lamanai by boat, you'll first be brought to the small museum, which exhibits some beautiful examples of pottery, and obsidian and jade jewelry. Then you'll head into the shady jungle, passing gigantic guanacaste (tubroos), ceiba and ramón (breadnut) trees, strangler figs, allspice, epiphytes and examples of Belize's national flower, the black orchid. In the canopy overhead you might see (or hear) some of the resident howler monkeys. A tour of the ruins takes a minimum of 90 minutes, but can be done more comfortably in two or three hours.
