Ypres–Menen buses pass through Hooge, which during WWI was the eastern flank of the Salient; it saw heavy fighting and loss of life on both sides. The Hooge Crater Museum is here, as are four CWGC cemeteries, the most significant being Sanctuary Wood.
Passendale & Zonnebeke
The 1917 battles around Passendale (then Passchendaele) left almost 500,000 casualties and made Passendale synonymous with wasted life. These days it’s known much more positively for its cheese. Ypres–Roeselare bus 94 (roughly twice-hourly weekdays, five daily weekends) goes through Zonnebeke, where you'll find one of the area's most comprehensive sites, Kasteelpark Zonnebeke. Bus 94 also passes within 600m of Tyne Cot.
