A very pleasant regional base for exploring this part of Belgium, Rochefort also has a lesser-known gem of a cave system. Almost everything is strung along the main street, known variously as Rue de Behogne, Place Roi Albert 1er and Rue Jacquet. This rises gently from an imposing statue-fronted church, passes the tourist office and continues to the private Château Comtal castle. Many shops and cafés sell Rochefort’s famous Trappist beer, but the Abbaye de St-Rémy, where it’s brewed (3km north), is closed to the public.
