Like Ypres, Diksmuide was painstakingly restored after total obliteration in WWI, but that's where the similarities between the two end. Diksmuide is a quiet and pretty town, but with few attractions to entice a visit.

Its resurrected Grote Markt (main square) offers a compact array of attractive traditionally styled buildings and a romantic city hall: it's hard to believe that almost everything in sight was rebuilt in the 20th century. West of the main square, there's a pretty little river port behind which stands the striking IJzertoren; it's the town's main attraction.
