Worth a Trip: Achouffe Brewery

Despite the silly gnomes on the labels, some of the Ardennes’ best beers are brewed by La Chouffe (Brasserie d'Achouffe). The name is a mild pun on Achouffe, the pretty Ourthe Valley village where it’s brewed. Brewery visits are mostly by appointment (sign up online at least two weeks ahead), but there are also three weekly drop-in tours.Start from the Chouffe Shop, which also sells takeaway beer and brewery merchandise. If you miss out on a tour, there are still three appealingly rustic taverns where you can taste the brews in driver-friendly galopin (120mL) glasses; the cheapest are at La Petite Fontaine while nearby La Grange has pleasant outdoor tables overlooking a stocked trout pond.

Achouffe is 4km off the E25 motorway, west of junction 51. There's no useful public transport here.
