Welcome to Abşeron Beaches
In summer, fearless local swimmers crowd the grey-brown beaches of the northern Abşeron coast. Though infamously polluted, the Caspian waters do often look temptingly turquoise and there are well-manicured sections of sand near Mərdəkən (bus 341 from metro Neftçilər) and on the pay beaches of Amburan (bus 72 from metro Əzizbəyov). Good alternatives lie north of Novxanı (bus 98 from metro Azadlıq Prospekti, 50q, 40 minutes) where you’ll find the resort-style AF Hotel. It’s built around an Aquapark where a busy trio of swimming pools and several tall waterslides are supplemented by various table and video games. The nearby beaches are packed in summer with snack stalls renting shade, 40q box toilets and AZN1 showers (duş) while close-packed locals bury each other in sand, splash in the waves, trot along on horseback or just picnic with the family.
