Book-ended by one of Europe's biggest universities, Alsergrund (9th district) counts Gustav Mahler and Karl Kraus among its former residents. In this cultured neighbourhood of churches and leafy squares, Franz Schubert notatated and Sigmund Freud navigated the unconscious. The gravitas of such history seeps through its cavern-like cafes and bars.
Alsergrund spills south into Josefstadt (8th district), which moves to a similar groove and is scattered with low-key restaurants, cafes and shops. Further west lies the ethnically diverse Ottakring (16th district) and a new Viennese generation bestowing a gentrifying glow on Yppenplatz.
