Tour description provided by Viator

This trip leads us to the stunningly beautiful Ötschergräben, also called the “Grand Canyon of Austria”. The water of the river dazzles and sparkles in all shades of green and the mountain scenery is just breathtaking. Not to mention the many waterfalls along the way. The best: it is possible to plunge into the river! The Ötschergräben are a system of gorges, located in Lower Austria on the border with Styria. The Ötscher mountain is 1.893 meters high and also known as "Vaterberg" by locals, which means father mountain. Highlights of this tour: • Spectacular alpine landscape • Crystal clear river with possibility to take a bath • Many waterfalls along the trail • Rare and protected alpine wild flowers • Alpine feeling on only 2000 feet above sea level • Adventurous alpine climb
ItineraryThis is a typical itinerary for this productAfter a 1,5 hours drive from Vienna, we will reach the Ötschergräben base camp and entrance to the nature park. The Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park is the largest nature park in Lower Austria with a surface of 170 km2. The reserve is characterised by pristine, untamed landscapes as well as areas that have been cultivated for centuries. The most formative element of the landscape is the Ötscher mountain with a height of 1.893 meters. Duration: 4 hoursLocation: Otschergraben, Wienerbruck, Lower AustriaWe will pass by a couple of waterfalls along the way (depending on season and weather conditions, they may carry more or less water) and basically follow the river, which carries an amazing crystal clear green water. The hike is not difficult, in the beginning the trail leads us mostly downhill for about 30 minutes, after that it runs evenly next to the river. Nevertheless, you should be in good physical condition, sure-footed and free from vertigo (alpine climb). In summer, there will be also time to take a refreshing bath in the river for those who wish to do so. We will make a break at a hut in the middle of the way - bring enough cash as they don't accept any card payments. Duration: 4 hoursLocation: Otschergraben, Wienerbruck, Lower AustriaThe last part of the hike starts with a steep uphill part, but it lasts only about 20 minutes and then follows an easy trail through the shady forest with some nice views in between to Ötscher mountain. We take the famous Mariazellerbahn back to the starting point (5 minute ride). Pure walking time is approx. 3 hrs.
