If you don’t fancy the four-hour walk from St Wolfgang to the 1783m summit of Schafberg, ride this historic steam train, the steepest cogwheel railway in Austria. Featured in The Sound of Music, it's a cute, local icon, but also passes through some beautiful alpine scenery.

Departures are approximately hourly between 9.15am and 3pm (the last trip down is 5.15pm). That said, the trip is so popular that you probably won’t be able to get on the next train. Queue early, purchase a ticket for a specific service and then go for a wander along the lake or around St Wolfgang until your departure time. Apart from its summer season the train also does an Advent run, with weekend trips from mid-November to mid-December.
