Salzburg’s rival mountains are 540m Mönchsberg and 640m Kapuzinerberg – locals used to bigger things call them ‘hills’. Both are thickly wooded and criss-crossed by walking trails, with photogenic views of the Altstadt.

There’s also an extensive network of cycling routes, from a gentle 6km trundle along the Salzach River to Hellbrunn, to the 450km Mozart Radweg through Salzburgerland and Bavaria.
