Snow-sure Mayrhofen has varied skiing on 136km of slopes, mostly geared towards confident intermediates, as well as some great off-piste opportunities. The skiing ranges from scenic tree-lined runs for cruisers to knee-trembling black runs, including the infamous Harakiri, to challenge experts. The ski pass (one-day pass €51) is valid for all cable cars, snowboard parks and lifts in Mayrhofen.
Walking is the big deal in Mayrhofen in summer, particularly in the glorious alpine country of the Naturpark Zillertaler Alpen. The tourist office website, www.mayrhofen.at, has excellent information on walks, maps and GPS downloads. From the village itself, two cable cars give walkers a head start to Ahorn (1965m) and Penken (1800m). If you know your karabiner from your crampons, Mayrhofen also has some prime rock climbing and via ferrate on its doorstep.
