Glöcklerlauf

Cultural in Ebensee

On Epiphany eve each year, the men of Ebensee don giant illuminated headdresses crafted from tissue paper for this pagan-inflected but now Christianised ritual. The 'Glöckler' – some 300 of them – roam through the streets when it gets dark, hoping to drive out evil spirits and win the favour of benevolent ones.

Many other Salzkammergut towns and villages also have Glöcklerlauf parades, but Ebensee is where the custom originated.
