The Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park is the largest nature park in Lower Austria with a surface of 170 km2 (66 mi2). The reserve is characterised by pristine, untamed landscapes as well as areas that have been cultivated for centuries. The most formative element of the landscape is the Ötscher mountain with a height of 1.893 meters (6.211 feet). The hike follows the trail through the so called “Hintere Tormäuer” of the Nature Park Ötscher-Tormäuer. This extension of the Ötschergräben is less frequented, but equally beautiful and easier to walk.Highlights of this tour: • Spectacular alpine landscape • Crystal clear river  • Waterfalls along the trail • Rare and protected alpine wild flowers • Alpine feeling on only 2000 feet above sea level • Magical forest • Afternoon snack in historical ambiance with stunning views to Ötscher mountain
Visit: Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature ParkAfter a 1,5 hours drive from Vienna, we will reach the Ötschergräben base camp and entrance to the Nature Park, where we will have to pay a small maintenance fee. We will pass by a couple of waterfalls along the way (depending on season and weather conditions, they may carry more or less water) and basically follow the river Erlauf, which carries an amazing crystal clear green water. In summer, there will be also time to take a refreshing bath in the stream for those who are brave enough. Over thousands of years, the river has dug its way through the limestone at the foot of the Ötscher mountain and left behind a unique landscape of canyons. The last part of the hike consists of a steep ascent through a magical forest. We will take our time and make sufficient breaks, according to the individual speed level. After a demanding climb we enjoy a well-deserved break with coffee and apple strudel on the terrace of the historic Alpenhotel Gösing, amazing view to Ötscher mountain included. We will be back in Vienna around 4 pm.The hike is not considered difficult. Nevertheless, you should be in good physical condition, enjoy walking, be sure-footed and free from vertigo (alpine climb). Walking time is +/- 3 hrs.
