The coast road north of Perth follows the Indian Ocean shores to some popular spots for travellers. Within an hour's drive, Perth's outer suburbs deliver the self-contained hub of Mindarie, then give way to the bushland oasis of Yanchep National Park, with its hyperactive wildlife and walking trails. Further north at the tannin-stained mouth of the Moore River, Guilderton offers excellent swimming and fishing; while if [insert deity of choice] had a plan, he/she no doubt tagged the breezy beaches at Lancelin for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sandboarding.
As the landscape changes along the Sunset Coast – moving through Wajuk then Yuat lands – so too does the culture. Aside from Mindarie's cafes and bars, this is laid-back camping and fishing terrain, with very few urban trimmings.
