Worth a Trip: The Coast to Canyon Circuit
This rewarding driving circuit begins in Ulverstone or Penguin. From Ulverstone, drive to Penguin along the picturesque coast road, then veer south before Sulphur Creek on the B17, continuing south to Riana. From South Riana, a scenic drive brings you to the George Woodhouse Lookout, offering views over the agriculturally rich Leven Valley. More winding road leads to Wings Wildlife Park, which is home to an eclectic collection of native and exotic animals.
Close by is Gunns Plains Cave, filled with magical limestone formations and glow-worms. Guided tours involve some clambering and ladder work. Back on the B17, you can complete the circuit to Ulverstone or take the C127 and C125 to the Leven Canyon. On the C127 at Gunns Plains is Leven Valley Vineyard, a boutique vineyard where you can taste its chardonnay and pinot before purchasing a bottle and some cheese and enjoying your lunch in the vineyard's garden. Signposted just off the road near the vineyard are lower and upper Preston Falls: all cascading water and primeval ferns.
Continue via Nietta to Leven Canyon. A 20-minute return walk here leads to the sensational gorge-top Cruickshanks Lookout, a sky platform peering 300m down to the Leven River below. From here, you can head back to Ulverstone on the B15, tasting and purchasing some golden-hued oil at Cradle Coast Olives en route.
