Built as a tin-mining town but now in its death throes, Waratah is the major eastern gateway to the takayna/Tarkine wilderness. It was here, in 1936, that the (presumed) last Tasmanian tiger was trapped. Although the Happy Valley gorge with its cascading waterfall is pretty, there's little to detain you here – it's a place to gather information at the Tarkine Interpretation Centre & Gallery and stock up on fuel and supplies before heading into the wilds.
