This small town set in apple-growing country has had two big moments in the spotlight. The first was when gold was discovered here in 1877; the second was in 2006 when a mine collapse killed one miner and trapped two others in a cage 1km underground for two weeks before they were rescued. Their story is told in the town's one and only tourist draw, the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre. To the east of town are rolling hills where a number of picturesque vineyards are located.
