An hour's drive south of Port Augusta is Whyalla − the third-biggest city in SA − with a deep-water port sustaining steel mills, oil and gas refineries and a morass of chugging chimneys, port facilities and industrial estates. Ugly, yes, but the old town has some good pubs, well-preserved domestic architecture and migrating Giant Australian Cuttlefish in the waters offshore (May to August).
In 2016 the owners of the main OneSteel plant announced they'd be winding down the business and auctioning it off, in the face of unsustainable operational costs, depressed steel and iron ore markets and competition from cheaper imported Chinese product. Hundreds of jobs were cut and Whyalla went into shock. At the time of writing the future of Whyalla's long-running steel industry was looking very shaky indeed.
