Welcome to Whyalla

In 2016, the owners of the main OneSteel plant announced they'd be winding down the business and auctioning it off, in the face of unsustainable operational costs, depressed steel and iron ore markets and competition from cheaper imported Chinese product. Hundreds of jobs were cut and Whyalla went into shock. Then in 2017, gallivanting UK billionaire businessman Sanjeev Gupta from GFG Alliance bought the Whyalla steel mills, and saved the city! Politicians slapped each other on the back and Whyalla went back to being Whyalla.
