Welcome to West of Charleville

Quilpie, an opal-mining town, is just over 200km west of Charleville. South of Quilpie are the remote Yowah Opal Fields and the town of Eulo, which co-hosts the World Lizard Racing Championships with Cunnamulla in late August. Thargomindah, 130km west of Eulo, has a couple of motels and a guesthouse. Noccundra, another 145km further west, has just one hotel supplying basic accommodation, meals and fuel.

Continue on the Diamantina Developmental Rd northwest to Windorah, which has a terrific country pub, general store, visitor centre and basic caravan park. Fill up here – this is the last fuel stop for the 380km trip to Birdsville on rough gravel roads. About 170km before Birdsville you'll pass through the ghost town of Betoota.
